German Gewehr 98 manufactured in 1903 by the Imperial Arsenal at Erfurt. The receiver is appropriately stamped "Erfurt 1903" with a crown above.
This particular rifle is an example of a very early production Gewehr 98. Produced only five years after the rifle was officially adopted by the German Empire in 1898, and has a unit disc on the right-hand side of the stock bearing the text "13 P.E. 2.118." as its regimental marking. It also retains the iconic "Lange Visier" rear sight.
The rifle is almost entirely matching, with everything barring the cleaning rod sharing the same serial number. It comes with a sling and matching serial numbered muzzle protector as well. The walnut stock is in great condition, with minor cosmetic marks, while the barrel is in excellent shape The exterior finish of the barrel towards the muzzle is slightly faded however.
Very few of these pre-First World War Gewehr 98s exist today in such great condition, and this would be a fine addition to any collection!
