  • German Gewehr 98 manufactured in 1901 by the Spandau Imperial Arsenal in Berlin. The receiver is appropriately stamped "Spandau 1901" with a crown above.
  • This particular rifle is an extremely rare and very early production variant of the Gewehr 98, used by soldiers of the German Empire in her colonies in Africa. Known as a "Schutztruppengewehr" (derived from the official name for the  German Empire's colonial troops, "Schutztruppe"), this rifle differs in small ways from a standard Gewehr 98. The rifles have their bolt handles curved for use on horseback, with an accompanying cut-out made in the stock below the bolt handle. The "Lange Visier" rear sights were also modified to begin at 200 metres as opposed to the standard 400 present on regular Gewehr 98s to allow for greater efficacy in jungle warfare. It also has a unit disc on the right-hand side of the stock, bearing the text "K.S. 8274. S" ("K.S." standing for "Kaiserliche Schutztruppe", or Imperial Protection Force). The acronym also indicates that it was issued to colonial troops in German South West Africa.
  • The rifle is in good condition, with the front barrel band and a small portion of the barrel after the barrel band having minor surface pitting. It is however not entirely matching, and the barrel is very worn.
  • These are incredibly rare rifles, with only 2,000 estimated to be left in existence. Although 10,000 Gewehr 98 rifles were believed to have been modified into "Schutztruppengewehrs", an estimated 8,000 of these were destroyed by 1915 when Germany's colonial troops in South West Africa surrendered to the British, South African, and Portuguese forces during the First World War. As such an extremely rare rifle like this would be a phenomenal addition to any collection!
